Starting and discontinuing service

How long can I keep my phone number once I have it transferred to KeepTheNumber?

As your service provider, KeepTheNumber will be able to help you hold on to your phone number for as long as you choose. You decide on the plan that best suits your needs, from month-to-month service without any lock-ins to longer term plans at reduced rates.

What do I need to get service with KeepTheNumber?

All you need is last month's copy if your phone bill to prove that the number is yours.

Unlike other phone services, you do not need a broadband internet connection, nor do you need to install any telephone, special equipment, or computer software to use the service.

What happens after I discontinue my service with KeepTheNumber?

If you decide to discontinue your service, KeepTheNumber will have to update the necessary phone number databases to mark your number as unused. KeepTheNumber may then have to surrender your unused number to other service providers for reassignment to new subscribers, usually after a period of time as determined by the particular service provider's policies.

Can I port or transfer my number to a different service provider in the future?

Yes, you can transfer your number to any other carrier that has the legal ability to port in your number on your behalf. Most landline and cellular phone companies have the ability to do this.

If you do choose to switch service providers, your next service provider will be able to provide you information on its number porting procedure and fees. Note that while KeepTheNumber does not charge you to terminate your service, your new service provider may impose a setup or installation charge to port your number.

How long will it take for KeepTheNumber to port my phone number from my current carrier?

While you can be assured that we are working as quickly as possible to port in your phone number, it may take a few days and up to 30 days to fully acquire the phone number from your current service provider.

The porting process requires several technical and manual interactions between KeepTheNumber and your service provider. Even after we submit the port request to your current service provider, it will take time for the request to be queued, acknowledged, transferred and correctly updated in number mapping databases.

Because we understand the importance of keeping you updated, KeepTheNumber provides you with your own regularly-updated porting status webpage for you to track the activity of your number porting process.

How do I find out if I can keep my number and if I am eligible for KeepTheNumber service?

Enter your phone number into the number portability checker, and it will tell you whether you can keep your number. If you can keep your number, you are eligible for our service.

How the service works

Do I actually own the phone number once I have it transferred to KeepTheNumber?

Unfortunately, phone numbers are never permanently "owned" by the general public. Phone numbers are assigned by the NANPA (North American Numbering Plan Association) to telecom service providers who charge the general public for their use. As long as a subscriber continues to subscribe to service from a service provider, his or her phone number usually remains unchanged for the duration of the service.

I already subscribe to this service, but I'm moving. Can I continue to keep my phone number?

Yes, KeepYourNumber will enable you to keep your phone number even if you relocate from your current residence. Remember to log in to your account online to update your current billing information and residential address in the event we need to contact you.

This is the first time I've heard of a service like yours. How come?

Unlike other phone companies that specialize in providing flat-rate residential phone services, KeepTheNumber is focused primarily on helping you keep your phone number, without requiring that you purchase additional telephone services. By being specialized in what we do, we are able to provide you with a unique service at a fraction of the cost of alternative telephone companies' services.

Unlike other services, KeepTheNumber enables our customers to go completely-wireless or keep their phone number no matter where they move.

What happens when somebody calls my ported number?

You can choose how calls to your number are handled. The call can be forwarded to any number you like, including international destinations. You can also choose to route the call to an announcement recorded by you.

Who pays for each call, and how much does it cost?

The cost of each call is billed to you at low, per-minute rates determined by where you choose to forward the call. Because your calls can be forwarded to almost any phone in the world, your callers will be able to reach you by simply dialing your original number. Callers incur no additional charges (if any) than they would have before you transfered your phone number to the KeepTheNumber service.

Will there be any noticeable audio delays or quality issues for the caller?

Not really. Any delay will be so slight that it is unnoticeable. This is because unlike other Voice over IP (VoIP) services that you may have used, both the you and your caller are using a wireless or landline phone to communicate. You will not face the jitter, delay and choppy sound quality issues that arise with VoIP phones or soft-clients on your PC that are connected to your home internet connection.

Will the caller be able to tell that his or her call is being forwarded?

Not in most cases. Call setup times are similiar to a normal phone call. In certain cases, your caller will hear a ring-tone that is native to the region where your calls are being forwarded (e.g. a European ring tone or Asian ring tone).

How will I know if a caller has called my ported number when my phone rings?

If your phone has caller ID, you can configure your KeepTheNumber service to show you either the number that the caller dialed, or the caller's phone number (like traditional caller ID). In either case, the call should sound exactly the same as if the caller had dialed your forwarding number directly.

Can I forward calls to landlines and wireless phones?

Yes, you can forward your calls to any valid landline or wireless number. Calls forwarded to any phone number in the United States are billed at a low, flat-rate per minute, regardless of location and phone type.

Is there a way to find out how many people call my ported number?

Yes, all calls to your ported number can be viewed in real-time, via any web-enabled browser. You can even see a list of calls that are forwarded to your phone when it is off or busy or if the caller does not leave a message.

Can I pick an unused phone number that I don’t currently own for your service?

No, we can only help you keep a phone number if you are the current subscriber of that number.

If you would like a new phone number, you can select one from any area code offered in our selection of Virtual Numbers.

How long will my service with KeepTheNumber last?

KeepTheNumber provides different service plans, ranging from one month to annual contracts. All plans are renewable so you need not worry about losing your phone number.

Virtual Telephone Numbers (VTN)

What is a Virtual Number?

Basically, a virtual telephone number is a phone number that is not associated with an actual phone. It's just a phone number, floating in “phone land,” waiting to be called. What KeepTheNumber allows you to do is associate a "real", physical, working phone to that virtual phone number by forwarding all calls that are made to the virtual phone number to the working phone number.

So whenever someone calls your virtual phone number, the call actually ends up getting forwarded to a real phone number you specify, and the phone associated with the real phone number rings.
